Thomas Button's son, Matthias Peter Button Sr, was born in this town, baptised in this church, then left here to come to North America sometime before 1628. Matthias was my ancestor.
The church dates from about 1145 in Saxon times. An Augustinian Priory was associated with it and located next door until 1536 when it was dissolved and sold by the king. The priory was destroyed and the stones from the buildings used in other nearby structures. Land up to the walls of the church were sold. The result is a home, still in place, was constructed right up to the church wall.
