Sunk in 19 July 1545, Mary Rose led the attack on the galleys of a French invasion fleet, but sank in the Solent, the strait north of the Isle of Wight. Diving on the suspected ship's site began in 1966. In 1970 a loose timber was located and on 5 May 1971, the first structural details of the buried hull were identified after they were partially uncovered by winter storms. It was recovered and displayed in Portsmouth.
